Hello. I am the Dr. Ray Strand , a GP who has practiced medicine for over 23 years. My firm, established in a rural community in the Midwest, keeps me busy, but I love my patients and I completely devoted my professional lives to protect their health.
Most of my colleagues focus their efforts solely to the fight against disease and neglect, or do not have time to consider preventive medicine and nutrition. Although I am always interested in preventive medicine, I was once lukewarm regarding nutrition. Over the years, many patients have asked me whether they should take a nutritional supplement. My answer was always the same: "If you eat healthy foods and varied, nutritional supplements are not necessary." There are some
years, articles discussing the "free radicals" and their role in degenerative diseases began appearing in medical journals. At first, thinking that the subject does little concerned with general medicine, I have little interest in these items. However, during the past year, experts in preventive medicine, including Dr. Kenneth Cooper, who launched the aerobics movement some twenty years ago, have spoken on this subject. The ultraviolet rays of the sun, other radiation, tobacco smoke, excessive exercise and stress are also factors that greatly increase the presence of free radicals in our system. It has been shown that excess free radicals can damage cells and even the DNA structure of cells.
The body produces antioxidants that are able to neutralize the radicals Free and render them harmless. However, in our modern environment, the body can not produce all the antioxidants it needs, and our diet should compensate for that deficiency. Additional antioxidants are primarily vitamins C, vitamin E and beta carotene. When the body is unable to neutralize free radicals, they will give heart to joy in the tissues. Research by Dr. Lester Packer, a biochemist at the University of California at Berkeley, demonstrated that free radicals pose a serious threat to health. Dr. Packer makes us particularly cautioned against the hydroxyl radical, a particularly volatile which is one of the main agents of the initial phase of cancer development. Free radicals attack the cell nucleus and damage DNA, which can cause mutation of cells and the development of cancerous tumors. Considering the
coronary artery disease, Dr. Daniel Steinberg, professor of medicine at the University of California at San Diego, suggests that the oxidation (the combination of free radical compound with cholesterol of low density lipoprotein or "bad cholesterol ") is responsible for the obliteration and hardening of the arteries. Gradually, as new research suggests a link between free radicals, the bad cholesterol and atherosclerosis, this position is increasingly accepted by the great names of medicine. It has been shown that antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C may reduce the rate of cholesterol consists of low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) while increasing the rate of cholesterol consists of high density lipoprotein (good cholesterol).
Other research has shown that cancer and coronary artery disease are less common among people whose system has a high level of antioxidants. In recent years, the results of numerous studies on nutrition and the state of public health have been published. There are about two years of very serious research indicated that approximately 300.000 annual cardiac disorders are caused by magnesium deficiency in the United States. Thanks to the awareness raised by this research, cardiologists automatically check the magnesium level of patients visiting their practice or cardiology department. Last summer, Dr. Jacob Selhub, professor at Tufts University in Boston, published an article in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that about 20% of heart attacks and strokes are caused by a deficiency of folic acid. Other researchers go even further and assign 30 to 40% of heart attacks and strokes suffered from attacks by the Americans for that deficiency.
